PUGET SOUNDSCAPE

(clink markers to hear underwater sounds - HEADPHONES RECOMMENDED)

This map represents a five week course of study on orcas (killer whales) & acoustics, while traveling and living aboard a 42' catamaran. The recordings were made by myself and 5 other students using underwater microphones called hydrophones. Most of the recordings were performed in the presence of orcas (specifically, J, K & L pod) though others were done in the presence of large ships which generate a massive din. Most of the recordings were done in the presence of bothwhales and boats, which reflects the general acoustic ecology of this area's soundscape. Whales and boat traffic are two of the loudest and most audible sounds beneath the surface of the water.
